Sappi claims new advance in deluxe packaging with Fusion

Sappi has reported that its Fusion 180gsm topliner has opened up new horizons for cardboard box manufacturers, particularly in point of sale
French corrugated specialist Cartonneries de Gondardennes said that it had posted market share gains for three years in a row with the product. Its benefits are said to include outstanding whiteness and print quality, reduced weight and very short lead times.

“The ‘whiteness’ feature is the key here”, said Cartonneries de Gondardennes sales director Michel Smets. “Fusion has a 98% whiteness level compared with 87% for standard corrugated board. This enables us to offer corrugated board with whiteness equivalent to that of the solid fibreboard used for product packaging. That means it is possible to manufacture POS displays in a quality equivalent to product packaging, which is a major asset for attacking the premium food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics markets. This capability has enabled us to grasp real opportunities.”

In reference to print quality, Smets said: “These days, an increasing share of the POS display market is in the hands of digital printers.”

“However, at present, few digital presses make machine varnishing possible. The whiteness and brightness of Fusion thus represent a strong competitive plus factor for digitally printed POS materials.”

“We have also seen our sales increasing in product packaging,” Smets added. “Offset printers making folding cartons and boxes used for primary packaging of deluxe products traditionally resort to solid fibreboard, the whiteness and printing quality properties of which they highly regard. But that makes for heavy packaging, easily reaching 500 – 800 g/m2. And although these cardboards provide the necessary rigidity, they are sometimes delicate to shape and fold.”
